I work as a consultant and yes my rate is high. Let me justify.
My consulting company first takes they healthy cut.
I only get paid for the hours I'm billable. So no paid holidays, vacations,
or sick days, not even Jury duty.
My company does not send me to conferences, this is an out of 'my' pocked
expense.
My medical insurance is all from my wife's employer. I could not work this
way without that support system.
I will not get a pension, only what I have put away when work is good.
For the last 5 years I have only had steady work 3 days a week and I and
very good at what I do.
When my clients datacenter is outsourced the displaced employees will get
some severance, I will just be released.

Why do I not take a direct position with my main client? The management is
unacceptable in their practices, I will not play their politics. By being a
temp I retain some independence. My personal reputation is much better that
what it would become as a member of the in-house team.

Yes I do well when the sun shines. It has been cloudy for quite some time.

Hmmmm... think I might have to argue this one. Consultants are usually
paid VERY well, and remain consultants because the money, in the end and
considering all their expenses, is far greater than they would make as an
employee.

Contractors, maybe not, but most probably work through a firm that provides
benefits, so in a lot of cases, probably a break even.

At least a contractor or consultant KNOWS when their last day is, an
employee, in most cases, does not.
