Two thoughts ...

1. You should have talked to the person you were giving as a reference
BEFORE giving their name, just to make sure you were still on good terms
with them.

2. The iSeries community is not that large that someone can pull that
kind of stuff and expect it never to come back and hit them in the back
of the head.  I'm currently working with someone I first met, at another
employer, about 15 years ago.  One day the guy, who gave you a bad
reference, will be sitting in an interview and who should show up as the
interviewer but you :)
