In more direct answer to your question, there is the possibility of 
opening an account at an AS/400 time-share provider. It seems I recall a 
fee of perhaps $25/month or in that range. I don't have direct web 
addresses available; they're bound to be in the Midrange-L archives and 
somebody is likely to send a reply with the info.

$25/month might be more than is comfortable when unemployed. Or it might 
be small enough to be in reach for you. Such an account could provide 
access to more products than a lot of production AS/400s have.
