Ross ?

It is my recollection from my experience in the early and mid-90?s was that
?MAPICS Source? could be obtained in several different ways ? It might have
been included in a transaction and written into a schedule, negotiated and
invoiced separately as a stand-alone transaction, or ordered through the
Marcam/ Mapics Support Organization as a "one-off" to help out in a pinch.

It was my understanding that a source code transaction was a ?perpetual?
transaction that did not carry an annual license charge, unlike other Mapics
licenses, which were ?non-perpetual? and required an ALF to keep the code
operational and in productive use.

I also believe that source code might have been taxable in Illinois, just by
it?s very nature of being perpetual.

I recall that it was the policy that once a customer was coded as a ?source
customer? in the Mapics system that they were always entitled to source
CD?s, and source was always included as part of any new release shipment.
Non-source customers did not receive source CD?s with new release shipments.

I believe that rules changed sometime after the introduction of the IBM
64-bit RISC 400. Around that time, things shifted to an annual licensing
charge for source, but customers requiring ?source in escrow? still had a
?one-time? licensing option through a written addendum. This annual
licensing approach only applied to new customers and Mapics customers who
never obtained source under the old ?one-time charge? methods.

I would not necessarily look for an old piece of paper as proof of source.
Look for the code in the licensing system. Look for the delivery of old
source CD?s. One way or another a lot of old Mapics customers became Source
customers. Back in the early and mid-90?s many things happened in the heat
of negotiation, and source code was usually a ?give away? just to sweeten
the deal.

That?s my entire recollection of Source???????.

If you have paid for source code, then your entitlement to it remains. If
you paid a one time fee back 20 years ago, we will need to research it a
bit.

Best route is through a Support call and via your account rep. It will
require pulling contracts to verify, and then setting up the access
properly. If there is no ALF, that can confuse our system, which may be why
your entitlement isn't visible.

Sure sounds as though the source code is yours based upon your late 90s
deal.

Most organizations do not modify the MAPICS/XA source code.

This comes from the lessons learned in the 80s regarding the difficulty of
upgrading from modified code.

However, it is common practice to take MAPICS/XA source code, copy it, and
then modify the copy.

The original is left intact.

Then, when moving to a new release,

A check is done to see if the release has incorporated your modifications
If so, the upgrade is done and the modification is discarded
If not, the upgrade is done and then the modification is incorporated into
the new release
This is a bigger deal in the event of database or dataset additions,
changes or deletions in the new release

Re: [MAPICS-L] Source code taken away

To clarify our situation, we have been a Mapics customer for over 20
years. I have been here about 5 years and inherited Mapics XA rel 3 code
that was heavily modified. My company purchased the source code in the
late 90s when Mapics started charging for source. They were told that
this was a one time charge. I remember the same thing happening at my
former company. In 2005, with the help of an Infor affiliate, we
upgraded to rel 7. Before starting, I had to request the Rel 7 source
code which Infor sent to me.

From what I am hearing on this site, it sounds like some customers are
now being charged an ALF. Others I have talked to have never heard of
this. We have never been informed of this.

I understand what Ross is saying about not allowing customers access
without paying, but in our case he is wrong. We did pay for source and
it was taken away without notice.

I agree with those that say we shouldn't be modifying the code but at
this point, it is an absolute necessity that I am able to access the
latest source code when I need to apply a PTF over our all ready
modified code.

Thanks,

Kevin

Pull the documentation on the command PSICTLJVA from the Infor website for
instructions on managing the global environment.
