Charley,
IMHO, unless you only use a single stock location, I would not populate the Item Master/Item Revision location field. According to the Support line site, it is for reference only. The only advantage is when you first create the Item Balance record it copies the default from ITEMASA (see below). I also found somewhere on the site that the ITEMBL default is used for Receiving and Backflushing (if nothing is keyed). (See below)

=============================================================================================================================================
The Warehouse Stock Location (WHSLC) in the Item Master file ITEMASA (or in the Item Revision file ITMRVA) is used only as a reference.
If you first create an Item Master record and populate the field Warehouse Stock Location, it will be automatically populated into the Item Balance record field WHSLC when you create an Item Balance (ITEMBL) record for the item.

In a controlled warehouse, WHSLC in ITEMBL is used as default location (if IM is tailored to use default locations), when location is left blank in inventory transaction entry. Also, when maintaining an ITEMBL record for a controlled warehouse, WHSLC is edited against the SLDATA file, and WAM3028 NEW DEFAULT STOCKING LOCATION NOT VALID is displayed if the location specified has not been defined for that warehouse. Stocking locations can be defined via IM File Maintenance, Location Control, Location Detail.

Shop packet material pick lists can be printed in WHSLC sequence, whether the warehouse is controlled or uncontrolled.

We do not have the luxury of having dedicated warehouse space and I
wonder about the value of having "default" locations stored in the item
balance (oops, item warehouse) and item revision records. We are almost
always assigning a different location than the default when we perform
the dreaded daily "put away" and it occurs to me that we might be better
served by eliminating default locations from these records and just
assign the location when we record the PQ, RP, RM, etc.

Any suggestions (be nice!) are appreciated!!

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Charley

the only thing we ever used that came close to default location was by law,
insurance, osha etc materials had to be kept together or seperate, and even
the we used LLM to not allow a transaction if someone indicated it was not
stored in the proper legal place and not allow the scanner transaction, which
alerted those involved in material handling
