Just a quick update. This procedure still did not work so I called support and got an apar. Apar 82008 should allow you to do this for the Customer object once it is closed.

First, I was being stupid and just solved this myself by updating the maintenance class for customer to allow system assigned keys, and then applying a number format to the system assigned key syntax. I tricked myself into thinking the controls on the maintenance tab were all disabled. Oops.

Second, I think the observation that James made is correct about intelligent next records in relation to key values. The only way I can think of to do this that I have not ruled out is by placing a query defaults button on the create template, but I'm not even sure if this can be done, or if it would work an a key value.

Third, we are not publicly held so the SARBOX auditors will have to wait until someone wants to buy us before they have a say. Although I am fascinated by the fact that they do not like system assigned numbers.

Thanks for your responses.

Josh

Unless I misunderstood, they are asking for MAPICS to assign new customer
numbers and/or vendor numbers. My SARBOX auditor strictly restricts who is
permitted to create customer and vendor numbers.

BTW - I do agree with the sequential numbering thing....

I think Josh pointed out a general deficiency in Integrator: auto
increment.

We've created a number of database solutions in Browser/Integrator that
replace all kinds of subsystems - and they work great for the legacy
aspect.
But then the user wants to create a new record and there is no mechanism
to support the creation of an intelligent next record. It would be nice
to
see a rules base engine that could be invoked similar to how PDM's work.

Dale, why would SOX care how the next record is generated, it's still
under the auspices of the respective control and only accessible by
the person who has the authority. Where SOX expect a paper log or
independent lookup, then a manual entry into the empty field?
Or did I miss something?

My SARBOX auditor would KILL me! Question: Why do you want MAPICS
to
automatically assign Customer Numbers? Would a generic customer#
work?

subject: [MAPICS-L] System assigned customer number in CSM

Hello group,

Has anyone figured out a way to convince XA to provide an
auto-generated
customer number when creating customers through CSM? I can write a
user
exit program for this if necessary, but I'm hoping to use a built-in
method if possible.

Thanks,

Josh
