MODATA/IMHIST Archive - Do I need to restore

Hi All

Excuse my ignorance here but I beg your indulgence.

I have a number of MODATA and IMHIST archives stored on tapes (1.2 and 2.5 
GB data cartridges). 
We are purchasing a new i-series and will no longer have access to this 
format of tape ( we will only 
have an Ultrium). I therefore need to copy the data from one tape to 
format to another. 

Do I have to restore this data to Mapics then rearchive it to the Ultrium 
tapes or is there a way I can 
copy from one tape to another ?
