I once had a client that tried changing the item number in all of the files and
programs to 20 positions. The result was summed up in one word: DISASTER!

I had another client that created a cross reference file that had the MAPICS
item number and a larger item number for internal use. They then modified the
required programs, reports, and displays to retrieve and print/display their
internal numbers. That was a lot of work but they had success.
