We went to a I5-520 in early August. We did not have any problems on the
software side of things. We had many problems on the hardware side. Our
520 arrived with no operating system installed, additional DASD we never
ordered, no power cables to connect the rack hardware to the rack power
supply. If you have to have an HMC, may the Force be with you. Hopefully
IBM has corrected the problems with getting that thing setup & functional..
OH THE PAIN!!!!
Once you have your new I5 up & running, the rest of the conversion will
probably be painless. We rarely see CPU utilization go about 15%...
We have discovered one problem with V5R3. If you try to compile a RPGLE
program that tries to sort an array with only one element defined for it,
the program will not compile at release level V5R3. but will compile at
release level V5R2. IBM is aware of this & are working on a fix to resolve
it.

We are coming from V4R3, 9402 Model 400. First problem, the used tape
drive
we purchased to get the data off the old box was not functional once
installed on the old box. Second attempt we had problems with our older
version of MDCC. We are running V6.5.4 and were told it would run just fine
on the I5. It connected to the I5 just fine and worked great on the client
side, but the actual MDCC program errored out with a data exception when
the
data was passed to the I5. The actual OS upgrade went great and boy is it
fast!

We are scheduled once again this Thursday, October 28th, to attempt our
upgrade to the new I5 (AS/400). MAPICS, Data Collection (aka Elfies) and
the AS/400 will be coming down at 3:30 p.m. for approximately 10 hours.
Please have all batch jobs completed and be signed off prior to 3:30. Time
tickets must be kept and given to Debbie for both 2nd and 3rd shifts.
