In A/P and A/R & G/L they added re-occuring batches. and G/L reversals. I am
pretty sure all in the last year. Also gave some enhancements to G/L closing
and reporting when prior period/year is not closed. But those are the 1st real
changes in what!!!!!!!! about 100 years..
I guess that was because the entire Mapics community did not jump on the IFM
bandwagon...
Of course P/R gets changed mainly because no one messes with the Federal govt.
(Unless you wear glasses and live in the North West part of the country...)

Minimal in older modules was the key phrase. I don't know how you could do
it, but I wonder how many fixes for the older modules were done in the last
few PCM's. I do know that recently they added who did an inventory
transaction instead of which terminal it was done at. That would be under
Inventory Management. I think that came out of the MAPICS conference with
many people requesting it.

Minimal bug fixes? PTF 5361 and counting. Plus from the blizzard of R7
fixes I think someone was actually brave enough to install it. Anyone
spin the latest cd yet?

It is the Computer Associates model of software lifecyle and it is
profitable as long as you do not spend money trying to acquire new
customers or enhance the existing system. JDE customers are fighting the
same battle now with Peoplesoft.

Some of you are preaching to the choir now.

In my simplistic little mind, if software development has stopped or has
been significantly reduced for a package as with the older core mapics
modules, and it is a stabilized system with only minimal bug fixes, the
ALF should be decreasing otherwise the delta between cost and benefit
continually widens.

I'll stop there before I get the soapbox out and begin to rant... Dale

Dale:

What I find even more frustrating is the amount of enhancements,
improvements and new functions that haven't been added to some of the
older Mapics modules like CAS, AR, AP, GL, SA, PUR.

With these modules we don't have HELP key text, and standard function
keys like F3 and F12 have not been incorporated.

This raises the question of where is the ALF for these NON improving
Mapics modules going or why are we being charged more each year if a
module that is dormant.

Subject: ALF Expense Analysis

I am in the midst of analyzing our ALF costs/benefits and am involved in
ongoing talks with my MAPICS affiliate regarding the continual annual
ALF increases that we have been experiencing with the goal of working
towards a mutually beneficial solution. I only wish that our business
could impose considerable price increases like this each and every year.
>From a personal perspective we have found ourselves in a position where
the ALF expense is consuming a significant enough portion of the budget
that it is now directly hindering our ability to implement and leverage
some of the newer modules and I have to believe that we are not alone in
this situation. If left unchecked, we will surely find ourselves
essentially "left-behind" because of the heavy baggage that we carry
each year with the mounting ALF charges.

As many of you have most likely done in the past I am talking with
various MAPICS accounts in order to make a comparison between ILF & ALF
charges and to determine what the "norm" is. My initial goal was to use
this data for internal decision making purposes only but if you wish to
receive a summary of my findings you can send me your statistics as
noted below. I will share my findings with those who chose to
participate but I will not disclose any company names.

* Modules installed & current ALF charges for each

* Concurrent user license? If so, how many?

* Tier based license? If so, what tier? How many average concurrent
users?

* ALF price changes +- occurring in past years

* Include any comments regarding your satisfaction of the value of
ALF expenses.
Improving satisfaction?
Decreasing satisfaction?
Neutral?

* Company name & contact email address

Being in IT for 20+ years I can appreciate the difficulty of how
software solutions are priced; both in terms of initial acquisition cost
and ongoing support costs. If ever there was a topic ripe for
controversy this is it. There is a little black area, a little white
area, and a LARGE gray area when it comes to software pricing. The
intent of this exercise is not to initiate some sort of widespread
witch-hunt but is aimed at helping those who participate to determine
how each of our individual ALF charges compare with other MAPICS
accounts by using a direct comparison of actual charges incurred. Based
on this information we should all be able to make better informed
decisions in the future.
