Thanks Ann, Kay and Donald. Took your suggestion to do a CHGJOB instead of
changing AMJOBD permanently. Last night I did not initialize any tapes and
the system answered the CPF4278 with an "I" during the back up, as desired.

I did a CHGJOB right at the end of our pre-backup command (a program to
disable all user profiles with LMTCPB *yes). The rest was a bit more work
as our post back up command is a CL which calls two other CL's. The first
CL it calls is a CL to back up our user libraries. I had to be careful to
get the value for INQMSGRPY just right depending on the job stream.

It appears to be working fine, just in time for month end!

Bryan,

Also, Donald wrote a CL program called with the "Pre" backup command option
of the MAPICS backup and uses the CHGJOB command to change the INQMSGRPY TO
*SYSRPYL for that job, so the AMJOBD is not permanently changed.

Thanks, that must be it! AMJOBD is currently set to *RQD. I'll set it to
*SYSRPYL and see what happens.
