Certainly not.  The one I'm familiar with goes back to the days of punched
cards when all data streams, including OCL had to end with a card punched
with a "/" in column 1 and an "*" in column two.  So when you were writing
scripts on the board you would always say, "... ending with a /*"

When Tom taught his classes, he would always say, "... ending with a /*" and
then correct himself, saying, "I'm sorry I meant /Nathan"  All the students
were "know it alls" and didn't want to look stupid so no one asked the
question until the FOURTH day.

He replied, "Oh, I'm so glad you asked.  IBM has always been a very
patriotic company and they have decided to honor some of our great American
heroes.  So they have changed the "/*" to commend the life of that great
American patriot, Nathan Hale - who said, "I regret that I have only one *
(ass to risk) for my country."

GROAN.

I am getting a COMPLEX with all the talk about the "nathan" joke!  Could
somebody please tell me whether it is about me? :-)

The only time I ever used punched cards was to build a "house of cards"
when I was 10 years old!  (My brother was in IT long before I was.)

Is that the one about "slash, Nathan" - back in the days of punched cards
and OCL decks?  I didn't hear it (first) from Dave, but I have used it for
at least 30 years.  I heard it from Tom Neuman - at the time he was head of
IBM education in Milwaukee - later went on to be an IBM Branch Manager in
Iowa.  I still have a page of his jokes.

Dave and I go back at least to the 70s - and we can also attest to his vast
MAPICS and manufacturing knowledge.  I think I even have some autographed
copies.  Are they worth more?

   In fact, I still use it.
