Instead of creating a new number, make the part uncontrolled floor stock.
As you require it, issue the whole length with an IS transaction.
Cut it to the size you require.
If you can use a shorter piece that is already issued, then you don't have
to issue anything - as Uncontrolled stock assumes you have enough on the
shop floor to supply all orders.
A safety stock on the item on the shelf will ensure that it is reordered
when the level of inventory in Mapics falls to a selected point.
By adding the item to the BOM's you can then see this item in MRP and
purchase with some accuracy based on the IX generated transactions.

I hope this makes sense as I have a bit of a cold and aren't thinking too
straight today.

Subject: Leftover pieces of Raw Material

After cutting a piece of pipe (raw material), the leftover length may be
10' and eventually you may have 4 pieces of 10' each (example). The on
hand balance shows 40' and none gets ordered. Of course the next need
is not for a 10' length, but a 30' length and only when someone pulls
material do they find out it isn't long enough for the operation. The
10' lengths could be used for some operations, so is not scrap, and the
lengths may vary so cannot assign a new part number. Any ideas on
handling this situation?

Thanks,
Ann
