Hi Patrick,
      This does not sound like a job for features and options.  F/O works
best when manufacturing does not start until a customer order is received,
because once the item is received into inventory, it loses its unique
identification.  
      Have you thought of using the item group and family to group your
items?  Or, if you have pdm plus, one of the user fields? Or even the
alternate item number?
