if you are using repositories and no manual installation then it is very
easy to find out if there is some 5250 software:

apt-cache search 5250

Frankly I'd be thrilled to do just that. The software I have been
able to install in that fashion was indeed very nearly as easy as for
the Mac.

The problem is I can't find a package for Navigator, or another 5250
client. Do you know of one?

You want to have stuff that just works out of the box then take your
favorite linux distro and just play by the rules which means use the
package management system which come with the distro.
