Well, the Dell wireless chips are Broadcom ... so why wouldn't they be supported?

Windows only driver code. Like softmodems and some printers. I think there has been some increased support for the latter items, but I never got them to work. Luckily I don't need a modem very often anymore. :)

Of course the REAL annoyance is the fact that Dell promotes Linux as a OS choice for many of their machines... some of which won't work 'out of the box'.

Yes, but if you specify a system with Linux, you'll get a different set of hardware. Don't get me wrong, it would be nice if every part of every Dell system worked with every Linux distribution, but the Broadcom chip is cheaper than the Intel, and people want cheap computers.
