What operating system are you running this on? Since you refer to xterm, can we assume that you are running some flavor of X11? If so, which one?

Have you tried xt5250? Does it work better or worse for you? It's just a simple shell script -- so if it solves your problem, you could just take a look at what it's doing.

Or, you might try using x5250 which reads the keyboard directly instead of going through the curses interface -- this might work better for you.

Sorry for not replying to your original message -- I no longer use X11 as my desktop, and was hoping that someone with more recent experience would jump in and assist.
