Perhaps the package you uninstalled was the one that causes the problem.
I'm strictly and windowmaker man myself, so I don't know too much about
gnome or kde.

Done.  I have an X5250 resource file ready to go.  Now I just need to
figure out how to make autoconf install it in the right place.

btw - I verified that (on my Gnome installation anyway) putting the X5250
resource file in /etc/X11/app-defaults/ fixes the foreground/background
problem.
