Then why do you need to kill them when you start X, if they've ended the
last time you ended X?

The patch applied against the CVS version.  But, at this point, it should
already be committed to the repo.

James always uses the 0.17 branch of tn5250.  So, I'll add my diagnostics
to that version.

Yes, I understand the symptoms, but I don't know what's causing them.
since I can't reproduce the problem locally, I propose adding some diagnostics
to the emulator so that you can send me a log that shows me what's happening...
