You can create the .Xdefaults file in the user's $HOME, but you must restart
X for it to take affect.  I just modify the XTerm file that is installed (
/usr/local/share/tn5250/XTerm for me)

I can't currently access my system that uses the .Xdefaults file to give an
example (I foolishly left it running Windows!) but I don't like that method
for a single user PC.
