Yeah, this is definitely a bug.

You're building it from source, right? Can you try this patch?   If it
works, I'll add it into CVS so that it's included in future releases,
so please let me know either way!

Excellent work.  I applied the patch and built in on windows and linux.
With -sign_key_hack it now gives me a - instead of a system error.
