Okay, here's some interesting things I've found...

The command which compiles and installs the terminfo entry fails if the
`xterm-5250' alias exists (but still updates the `5250' entry). I've changed
the installation rules in (for Linux platform only) to guess where these
files are and remove them before running `tic 5250.terminfo'. Since we
are using xterm-5250 as the terminal type and not 5250, this could mean that
you would be using an older terminfo entry.

Also, I'm confused as to how the Home => \E[H problem showed up, or even
why it's showing up now. The new XTerm file in CVS instructs the xterm
to send \E[1~ instead of \E[H (I was reading the terminfo file incorrectly
before). It still doesn't happen on my box. Strange.

I've also made a change so that a non-root install will work better - it
will make the ~/.terminfo directory and use `tic' to install the terminfo
entry there. This should fix some of the issues with tn5250 on that Irix
box (who was that?)
