The command

echo -e '\033[?6c'

when issued from the shell will give you a blinking block cursor. KEEP IN MIND
this is for the linux console....this doesn't work for xterms....only when
you're running with a shell on the console, i.e. if you're running on tty1 -
tty6. (You can find out which tty you're on with the 'tty' command.)
