Re: esc+esc to see characters typed?

I am using tn5250 version 0.12.51. I also tried the CVS version this week. I 
don't
know what version that is.
My RedHat linux kernel is 2.2.5-22.

I didn't know what to do with the Xdefaults, so after I got your reply, I copied
the Xdefaults file to $HOME/.Xdefaults. It made no difference.

Here's what I'm doing:
-As root: ./configure, make, and make install.
-As myself: Open an xterm window.
-cd <tn5250-0.12.51>
-Make my ppp dialup connection to our AS400 at V3R7: su -c "kppp &"
-su -c "tic 5250.terminfo"
-xt5250 <ip address of AS400>

I've tried variations of the above, including running from a console session and
using 'loadkeys us5250.map' with 'tn5250'. They all work the same way. The
characters I type don't show up until I press escape twice.

I figure I must have missed some part of the README, or I'm just plain stupid.

I really want this to work because I've removed Windows from my computer so I
can't use Client Access and x3270 or telnet is too awkward.
