Thanks for that. I'm not sure whether runnable jars would be the correct thing for us, let me check it out.

You may want to talk to the Java developer and ask if "executable jars"
/ "runnable jars" would be feasible. Then the classpath can be listed inside the jar without any external configuration at all.
