Sometimes the connection jobs are staying in the system long after web
server is shot down.
Closing the JDBC connection should be sufficient, but you may have connection leaks if you do not return the connections properly to the pool from your application code.

When you say "web server shut down" does that mean _ending_ the JVM running the web server? If not, then try that.
