I've gotten unexplainable VerifyError's using the classic VM that went away when using the j9 VM. Google "verifyerror iseries" and you'll get plenty of hits on the subject. For me this came up most recently when trying to use JPA in a JSF project in Websphere 7.0; I had to change WAS to use the j9 VM instead of the classic VM, in order to get things to work correctly.
Interesting. Apparently the Sun JVM only runs the verifier on untrusted code (where being on disk is enough to be trustworthy as I have understood it), where the Classic JVM runs the verifier on all code (but caches the result).

Actually this bit me when trying to run the JRuby code on V5R3, so that is nice to hear that the J9 JVM behaves more like the Sun JVM.
