Yes we are hand coding them but I dont know if adding another layer is what I want to do. Just asking for a comparison of javascript vs JSF. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Are you hand-coding all the javascript? Take a look at some of the
(client-side) libraries out there to help you, I'm very partial to
prototype (www.prototypejs.org) but there are others. Makes a lot of the
client-side code trivial and it's back-end agnostic.
