I am not certain if this is what you are asking but I just looked in the source for JtOpen 5.0, and it appears that the code to determine whether to use the com.ibm.db2.jdbc.app.DB2Driver or the toolbox one is located in the method in AS400JDBCDriver.java line 980

Basically the native driver must be available and a _LOT_ of conditions be fulfilled.
