Paul,

We use Textpad. It is notepad like, has the formatting of WordPad, but
does not have issues with file locking. Will also ask if you want to
update the open file each time the iSeries does an update to the log.
Google Textpad. Relatively inexpensive also.

John

Pete,

Yes, I am mapping a drive. I can open the file with NotePad but lines

of log data wrap and it becomes nearly unreadable. When opening the
log
with wordPad I get the locked file exception. I can copy the locked
file and open the copy with WORDPAD but that is not convenient. It
seems that the iSeries JDK file.io/IFS code behaves differently in
terms
of locking than the Windows/sun JDK equivalent. It simply makes it a
pain to view log files. Perhaps there is a viewer that can both
format
nicely and not lock. However, this makes it a pain for end
user/customers to get some special viewer.

As Walden indicated, notePad must open readOnly while WordPad opens
for
write.

Thanks, Paul
