It just seems to be when the iseries goes down that we
don't get an exception. We have a wait time on the
call to the dataqueue read of 2 seconds, so it seems
that the call is not returning even afetr the 2

I have seen for quite a while that if a cobol program crashed there was
no response to the java programe. I thought this was due to the server
side part crashing, and would make a timer on the programCall to ensure
a response time.

It turned out that it was awaiting an operator response to an inquery
message, and that the needed response was returned after this had been
given.

Setting the behaviour to just use the default reply to this, gave the
expected behaviour to me. Perhaps you are experiencing somehting similar.
