No need to worry, the RPG runtime handles that.

You've probably been taking advantage of this when you call the String
constructor.

Do you code your String constructor something like this?

   D newstring        pr         o    extproc(*java : 'java.lang.String'
   D                                        : *constructor)
   D   value                65535a    varying const

If so, you are using the constructor that takes a byte array parameter.
