Assuming the local file system is Windows (the one you constantly remind us you 
dislike :) ) this is possible using some JNI code to talk to the Windows Shell 
API's to get the common icon that Windows has associated with that particular 
file type/extension.

This code of course, is not usable on other platforms where the local OS is not 
Windows.
