Thanks all. I guess my problem was in trying to combine the -jar parameter with the -classpath parameter to the java command. Once I got away from that and included my program jar in the classpath and invoked the class name, it worked.

Now that I know how to use the -classpath properly, there are no problems. (The sysadmin objected to using the ext directory method, so I had to learn a new way to do things.)

Thanks again.

Where should I put the jdbc driver? On other platforms, I've put the

I think it's OK to put user data in the UserData subtree, even though it's
under QIBM. I've never used the ext directory mechanism, though: I always
put drivers and other third-party jars in a directory of my own choosing and
make sure they're on the classpath at runtime.

1. If I avoid my workaround and avoid the /QIBM directories,
no matter
what I do with classpath, I always get an error "No suitable driver
found" when I try to connect to MSSQL. What is the right way to set
classpath?

The most common way is to set the CLASSPATH environment variable. You can
do this in a couple of ways. Since you're running your Java program from
CL, I'm assuming you are calling it with the native JAVA command. In which
case the simplest way is probably to include an ADDENVVAR command in jour
CL, before the JAVA command. You could also specify the classpath on the
relevant JAVA command parameter itself.

2. What is the difference between UserData and ProdData in the /QIBM
directory?

As I said above, as far as I know, UserData is for user data ;-) Though how
that is defined, I don't know.

Cheers,

Martin.
