    I think what you are seeing is the inadequacy of mailing lists ( and I
mean in general; no potshots at this one ) and forums ( I run several ) to
address larger issues.

    Let me say that there is a difference between performance and
scalability.  You may want to look over

    Also, whatever route you go, I'd suggest loosely coupling things as much
as possible, so that when bottlenecks arise you can approach them without
having to tear into and possibly affecting the entire code set.

    Last, and then I'm going to step out of this one, try to be sure that in
addition to knowing *what* you're doing, know *why* and understand the
