Like Patrick, I grabbed iText from the web. I also found an article on 
Ignite/400 that had some really good info
(including source files).  Basically, we built interfaces between java and ILE 
RPG so that we could do the file handling
via RPG, then converted the results to text and finally, to pdf.  

There is an article on ignite400.org that uses iText (which can be found on 
source forge) to create pdfs from spool
files.  (It creates a command called SPLFTOPDF).  That technology could be 
leveraged to do exactly what you describe....
I'm having trouble finding the original article, so if someone knows where it 
is I'd be obliged if he/she posted the
url.  I have the code, not the article :-(

If you want something more detailed, let me know off board and I'll be happy to 
send whatever I got....
