I am not sure why you need the intermediary step to XML, but
it would seem that the challenge is getting the .XLS file to XML.
I do not know if this will help, but the POI project does offer
Java support for Excel files. POI is also now part of the
Apache Jakarta project and is likely to pick up quite a bit
of interest.

If you are interested go to http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/ and
check it out. I know that POI will run on the iSeries and others
are using it to create XLS files. I don't know of anyone using
it to read from .XLS files, but it is definitely a goal of the
project.
