Just a thought:  Are you sure the infinite loop is running?

The OS/400 JVM can be pretty clever sometimes about finding and eliminating
useless code.  If you did CRTJVAPGM at OPT(40), one question would be "is
the infinite loop still there?"

Also, while I can't see your code but only your description, there may be a
distinction here between the object existing and the underlying DB objects
existing, depending on how you coded it up.
