This is my understanding as well.  I believe that VAJ will be phased out
in ~ two years.  I'm not sure where I heard that but I heard it
somewhere.

Yes and no.  Eclipse is the open source version of Websphere Studio
Workbench.  WSAD is a series of plug-ins built on top of Websphere
Studio Workbench and those plug-ins are -not- open source.  So Eclipse
(open source) is the base, WSAD (not open source) consists of things
built on top of that base.

I think it is worth it to learn WSAD since that is where things are
