Oh oh ... me me .. <waving hands franticly> <grin>

Seriously ... our java based Issue Tracking system has a fully object
oriented database access mechanism (although not very well implemented).
All we have to do to support a new database is change our database "Engine"
class and it works.

I'm currently working on a project to support DB2/400 as a target database
... all I have to do is extend our current DB2 support to accommodate the
400 variations, and it works fine.  Mind you, all the database access is
using JDBC, but there is no requirement for this.
