Glen,
Tomcat works great on the iSeries. IBM even uses it to support the Apache
configuration application. The best guide I know of on setup is available
here:
http://www.midrangecomputing.com/mc/article.cfm?titleid=b1656&md=200012
That link could go away at any time so I would bring down a local copy. That
article talks about unzipping on the iSeries, I would just copy to a mapped
drive.
Also, you can set the memory size larger for better performance. That is set
on
the java command. I think mine is set to 64M, but I am not at my system to
check.
I have been using Tomcat with Struts and Cocoon, which seems to cover most
of my needs. Compared to WebSphere, it won't scale up to the multi-system
level. Also no EJB support, although there are other options. For a small to
mid-sized installation it performs pretty well. Definitely better than
WebSphere
on a small system.

We have successfully deployed a web site on a Linux server running
Apache and Tomcat (that accesses AS/400 data using JDBC), and now
want to upgrade our intranet site (hosted on an AS/400) to include
some servlets and JSPs.
My experiences with WebSphere have not been entirely positive; what
is the current start of the art w.r.t. running Apache and Tomcat on
the AS/400? Can someone post pointers to information on this?
Also, could someone post a link to how to switch JVMs from 1.1.8 to
1.2 (we're at V4R5 on one box and V4R4 on the other)? Is 1.3
supported on either of those operating systems?
