Hi Tom,

a prepared statement is a precompiled statement, so each field has to be
stated. You can only replace constants by "?". In your case you can use
the class Statement. Please try coding as follows:

String parameter = null;
String newStatement = null;
ResultSet rs = null;
Statement stmt = null;
PreparedStatement ps = null;

 if ((parameter = request.getParameter("SORT")) == null){
        ps = conn.prepareStatement("SELECT * FROM LIB.CUST ORDER BY cmgage
");
        rs = ps.executeQuery();
 }
 else {
        stmt = conn.createStatement();
        rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM LIB.CUST ORDER BY " +
parameter);
 }

Is it possible to sort a database with an HTML form to select the sort
criteria value and then passing the value as a parameter to a servlet?
The
following code snippet from my servlet will not work with ? for ORDER BY:
Do you have any suggestions?

 String parameter = null;
            if ((request.getParameter("SORT")) == null)
                     stmt = conn.prepareStatement("SELECT * FROM LIB.CUST"
+
                   " ORDER BY cmgage "); // Execute the query
                else {
             parameter = request.getParameter("SORT");
         stmt = conn.prepareStatement("SELECT * FROM LIB.CUST " +
        " ORDER BY ? " ); // Execute the query
       stmt.setString(1, parameter);
