The constant " " is not the same as the object "field", so they will always
compare not equal. You need to code !field.equals(" "); That does a
String compare. The != asks if they are the same object, not whether the
contents are the same...

Subject:  compare to a blank

hello,

after a field is retrieved via record level access i am having a hard time
comparing to a blank. In rpg on the 400 i would say (field ifne
" ")
but i guess that doesn't work. With debug i know the field is empty. I have
been trying this

if(field != " ")    {
          out.println(field);}
else {out.println("Empty"); }

Also tried field != null

any suggestions?
Thanks in Advance
