Well, I didn't expect this good of a response.  I appreciate the help, believe 
me, more help than you will ever imagine (couldn't get the Perl runtime to load 
anyway, something to do with corrupted savf).

DO NOT use perl !!

It is much harder then java, less elegant and worst it is not
officially supported on the as400 (It is shipped on as is base).

Writing sockets in java is easy and you can locate examples
anywhere(you can start on the sun's java tutorial on www.javasoft.com).

BTW - from experience they knew why  perl is not supported since perl's
as400 implementation is, shall we say, far from being perfect..
