I don't have experience with Perl, but Java is a great language for doing
sockets programming. The java.net package plus the various inputStream,
outputStream, reader, buffer, etc., classes provided by Java make both client
side and server side sockets programming quite easy. The Toolbox uses these
built-in features of Java to communicate to and from an AS/400 (the "from" is
the case where the AS/400 is a client to another AS/400). Our experience is
they work as well on an AS/400 as any other platform. Since the facilities are
built into Java, it is easy to write a program that runs on many platforms. No
recompile or recode needed -- the same binary runs everywhere.

Subject: Java or Perl?

I have a problem. I need to do socket service processing to send info to
different systems on our LAN (including our Web servers). Does the Java
implemented on the AS/400 support this? Also, has anyone used Perl? This seems
to be a promising language, and it does support socket processing. Anyone out
there having info on AS/400 Perl and Java Socket processing would be greatly
appreciated.
