IBM has officially announced (if you look hard enough) that V4R4 of OS/400 - at
least the Java toolbox! - will NOT be made compatible with Java 2. That is, it
will not use the javax.swing naming conventions; it will stick with the old
com.sun.java.swing names from Swing1.0.3. They say this is in order to avoid
"breaking existing customer applications". Okay. Whatever.

In the same breath, they say they WILL move to Java 2 naming conventions for the
"release after V4R4". And, they are providing a "preview" release of the
current Mod 2 toolbox with the Java 2 naming conventions. You can get it at:

http://www6.software.ibm.com/dl/as400/astbmj2-p

The package there is ONLY the jt400.jar file, which you'll then have to unzip
into wherever you put the jt400.jar file from the "final release" of the Mod 2
toolbox (those of you who used the installation instructions from my website,
that would be in directory c:\java\jt400\lib). In the readme for this package,
it specifically states that there will NOT be a PTF to V4R4 to provide Java 2
support.

I guess the good news is it looks like they'll support Java 2 in "the next
release" of OS/400.
