Well, hello everyone!

Nice to be here... I just flew in and BOY are my arms tired! <rimshot>

Seriously, though, just thought I'd introduce myself and toot the horn for my
new site. The site is www.zappie.net, and it's brand new. In fact, it's so
new it's still having labor pains, believe me <smile>. I hope you all don't
mind: the site is not-for-profit, it's for people to help each other. There's
not even any banners.

Of primary interest to people here will be the Java section, which deals with
Java in its many facets but particularly with Java for the AS/400. In fact,
there's a step-by-step installation guide for downloading and installing Sun JDK
1.1.7B, Swing 1.0.3 and the latest IBM Java Toolbox for the AS/400. As time
goes on, I'll have test programs to test your connection to the AS/400 as well
as example/tutorials.

For RPG programmers who don't quite know what to make of Java, there's a
fundamentals example called Word which (as it progresses) will step you through
the first phases of creating a Java program: defining a class, defining methods,
extending classes and so on. It's all done with free software and no special
techniques, so anybody can use it.

Other examples will be for database connectivity using the AS400File classes
(the example will encapsulate them in classes that will hopefully be more
familiar to the RPG folks, with methods like CHAIN and READE) and for basic
client/server programming.

Finally, some nice people (Alex Garrison is one) will be contributing free
classes for you to download and use. My classes will be there as will those of
anybody who cares to contribute. I'm hoping to make the site a center for the
sharing of software components; as such, it should be a nice counterpoint to
this mailing list.

So, if you get a chance, drop by and take a look.

Joe "Zappie" Pluta
