<Rant Mode On>

I have seen several messages from people talking about "throwing away" their
green screen applications. I just started working at a regional insurance
company that has 24 years worth of business knowledge tied up in COBOL(with
some Fortran) code. We want to start doing Client/Server(that's why I'm
here) applications with data in IMS on MVS and application code running on
NT(not my choice believe me) and on the Mainframe.

We will be using APPC to go from an NT application server(Microsoft
Transaction Server most likely) to transaction programs on MVS. These
programs will be the green screen apps we are currently using modified to
communicate via APPC with our NT code.

The reason I mention this is that unless the "legacy" code was written in
such a manner that the terminal IO absolutely cannot be separated from the
business logic it can almost certainly be reused in the 2nd and 3rd tier of
a 3 tier client server system. Throwing away old code just because you are
going to a new programming paradigm should be a crime punishable by
impeachment(or at least censure). The AS/400 has transformed itself into an
outstanding 3rd tier platform with the addition of TCP/IP, Java, Perl, and
the PowerPC processors. And with all this new technology it is still the
same old boringly predicable and stable platform it has always been.

Ken,

I'm right down the road from you. We also have Domino running natively at
V4R3 on one of our AS/400's. I use the VA Java Enterprise 2.0. I have not
had the opportunity to learn much about Java so far. I think that the
re-engineering of legacy RPG applications to a client server model, using
Java on the front end, is a critical priority for my environment. There is
too much value in our legacy applications to "throw it away" and too little
value in our "dumb" green screens to keep them. I have shipped an
application off to CST, for them to run through their Jacada product. It
will theoretically automate the migration of the user interface in a legacy
application to Java. Advanced Business Link has a similar product. IBM has
a redbook that describes the concept in some detail, but does not attempt to
automate the process much. Ask me in a year if I'm flipping burgers or
suffering from a caffeine problem ;)

To tell you the truth, until your message came through, I had forgotten
that I
subscribed to this list. Anyway, like many of the other respondents,
Siecor
is still experimenting with Java on the AS/400. I've been working recently
with
java/400 access to our Domino/Notes databases that are running on one of
our AS/400s. I have the VA Java - pro ed. - but I'm primarily working with
the SDK only until I have a better idea of how everything fits together.
