To effectively exploit OO, one really has to do some upfront thinking and general design.

I disagree slightly on this. There is an entry barrier of getting a 5250 emulator on the users machine, which is somewhat steep. I also believe it is impossible to get Client Access on a Windows PC for a plain user.
