OK, there is a little discrepancy I believe...

In the Domino 8 NAB, there is a field "Photo URL" in the Miscellaneous tab
of the person document. The only help I can find about this is the
hover-over help window on the field. It is just a URL to a photo "that
applications can make us of."

There is also a procedure that can be used to just create a rich text field
in the person document form to be used as the image storage that Sametime
can use. See the procedure here: http://www.bingham.co.za/?p=28

And if you are using R8, are you using the R8 template for the Domino
Directory?

By the way someone asked earlier where photos are stored. There is a
field in the Domino Directory used for an image. Sametime can look
here for displaying the image used in chats and the business cards.

Where in the Directory are they stored. I can't find any such parameter.
This is sounding better all the time.
